Jockey Jareth Loveberry, who injured his left arm and shoulder when riding at Canterbury Park June 21, will be unable to ride Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's in the Ohio Derby (G3) June 24 at Thistledown due to that injury, the rider said.
Gerardo Corrales has picked up the ride on the Patricia Hope, Phillip Sagan, and Madaket Stable-owned 3-year-old, according to trainer Larry Rivelli. Corrales will also ride the trainer's two other horses Saturday at Thistledown.
Corrales rode Two Phil's in the colt's debut a year ago at Churchill Downs, when Two Phil's was fifth, and Loveberry has been aboard since for eight subsequent starts. Winner of the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) earlier this spring in his start preceding the Derby, Two Phil's is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the $500,000 Ohio Derby.
The specific nature of Loveberry's injury is still to be determined as is a timetable for a return. He was resting at his home in Chicago when reached by BloodHorse June 23.
He said he is awaiting an MRI and a visit to an orthopedic specialist.
"It's just a waiting game. Get some rest, (apply) some ice, and hopefully it's not bad," he said.
Loveberry said he was injured when his mount in the seventh race on Wednesday night at Canterbury Park, Artemus Citylimits , broke awkwardly leaving the starting gate in the $75,450 Dark Star Turf Sprint Stakes. The grass sprinter recovered from the early bobble and finished fifth under Loveberry.
