First-crop sire Catholic Boy was represented by his first winner July 2 as Lady d'Oro won her second asking by 3 3/4 lengths over five furlongs on turf at Monmouth Park. She stopped the clock in :57.12.
Lady d'Oro is out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Popstar , who has produced two other winners. She was foaled in Kentucky and bred by Lauren West, Val Henson, and Jonathan Thomas Racing.
The bay filly was most recently an RNA for $19,000 this year at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training out of the Potrero Stables consignment. Lady d'Oro had initially been purchased by R K G Racing at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale for $22,000 out of Bedouin Bloodstock's consignment.
Owned and trained by Leopoldo Ortega, Lady d'Oro first ran June 16 at Monmouth, finishing sixth.
The 8-year-old Catholic Boy is by More Than Ready and out of the Bernardini mare Song of Bernadette. He was owned during his racing career by Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables, Siena Farm and Twin Creeks Racing and was bred by Fred Hertrich and John Fielding.
Trained by Jonathan Thomas, Catholic Boy was 7-2-0 in 13 starts. Among his six graded stakes wins were triumphs on turf and dirt as a 3-year-old in the Belmont Derby Invitational (G1T) and the Travers Stakes (G1), respectively, both in 2018. He finished his racing career with $2,134,000 in earnings.
Catholic Boy entered stud at Claiborne Farm in 2020 and stands there for $15,000. He has had six other foals to race through July 2 in addition to Lady d'Oro.
Catholic Boy was purchased by Whitehorse Stables for $170,000 out of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment at the 2016 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.
