Survey Finds 31,000 Equine Enterprises in Kentucky

Survey results released by the Kentucky Horse Council and the University of Kentucky suggest that nearly 210,000 equines reside in Kentucky at 31,000 different operations over 900,000 acres.

The 2022 Kentucky Equine Survey, which looks at all breeds of horses as well as donkeys and mules, estimates that the total value of the state's equine and equine-related assets is $27.7 billion and the estimated equine-related sales and income for equine operations in the state in 2021 reached $2.1 billion. 

Thoroughbreds are listed as the majority breed, by numbers, at 48,500, followed by 35,000 Quarter Horses.

The survey organizers thanked all of the people who took time to participate. They noted that the information gleaned from the survey will allow the equine industry to: 

•    Improve equine healthcare

•    Educate and inform state and local policymakers 

•    Inform workforce development

•    Aid in supporting proposals for business ventures or grants

•    Identify emerging markets
