Wincze Hughes, Law Win Hirsch Writing Awards

Description:

Alicia Wincze Hughes of the Lexington Herald-Leader and Tom Law of ST Publishing earned top honors in the New York Racing Association's sixth-annual Joe Hirsch Memorial Writing Contest.

The award recognized the best in print and internet coverage of the 2014 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), won by Tonalist.

Wincze Hughes won for her feature story leading up to the race, which profiled trainer Art Sherman's son and assistant Alan Sherman, who oversaw Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome's preparations for the "Test of the Champion."

Law won for his follow-up piece titled "Good Sports, Bad Sports," which took a poignant look at some of the most sincere moments of good sportsmanship from winners and losers in horse racing through the years, as well as touching upon those who took defeat harder than others.

The winners will receive their awards June 3 at Rockefeller Center, during the official draw for the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes.

The awards are named in honor of Joe Hirsch, the longtime executive sports columnist for Daily Racing Form, who died Jan. 9, 2009.
