Extreme cold forced Aqueduct Racetrack, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Penn National Race Course, and Turfway Park to cancel their Friday, Jan. 24 race cards.
Citing cold weather, the New York Racing Association canceled live racing at Aqueduct for Friday, the third full or partial card cancellation due to weather since Jan. 1. The Jamaica, N.Y. track will remain open for simulcasting, with live racing scheduled to resume Jan. 25.
According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature in New York City is expected to be 17 degrees Friday. At noon, the temperature is expected to be 15 with 15 mile-per-hour winds making it feel like 1 degree below zero.
Due to extremely cold windchill temperatures, live racing at Turfway was canceled for Jan 24. The facility remains open for simulcasting.
The cancellation is the first of the current winter/spring meet at Turfway.
Dollar draft beer remains available, but live music is canceled. The Homestretch restaurant remains open for a la carte menu service, but the prime rib buffet will not be available.
Due to the cold temperatures in the region, Charles Town has canceled its live racing program scheduled for Friday night. The track will remain open for simulcasting with the next day of live racing scheduled for Saturday.
Extreme cold with wind chill temperatures below zero also forced the cancellation of live racing on Friday nigh at Penn National.
