Finding an extra gear in late stretch, Klaravich Stables' Consumer Spending powered home to edge Surprisingly in the $300,000 Matchmaker Stakes (G3T) July 22 at Monmouth Park.
Settled into the back of the pack by Joel Rosario, the filly traveled off the pace while Canisy and Bipartisanship led the 1 1/8-mile turf race through early fractions of :24.41, :49.04 and 1:13.16. In the stretch, Shug McGaughey trainee Surprisingly took command from the outside before Consumer Spending came up with a stronger bid to cross the wire first by a half-length. The even-money favorite completed the distance on firm turf in 1:48, giving trainer Chad Brown his fourth straight and seventh win overall in the Matchmaker.
Runner-up Surprisingly was 2 3/4 lengths clear of Gam's Mission in third.

The Matchmaker awards stallion seasons to Global Campaign , Independence Hall and Improbable to its top-three finishers from race sponsor WinStar Farm.
Consumer Spending ($4) earned her third graded stakes win Saturday and improved her record to 6-2-1 from 11 starts while increasing her earnings to $737,000. The daughter of More Than Ready's last start was a win in the June 17 Eatontown Stakes (G3T) over Surprisingly.
The winner was bred in Kentucky by Forging Oaks Farm out of the Scat Daddy mare Siempre Mia , who has two winners from three foals to race. The dam also has a 3-year-old Empire Maker maiden colt named Baba Voss and an actively breezing unraced 2-year-old full sister to Consumer Spending named Spendalot.
