The 2023 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Manitoba Division) Yearling Sale concluded Aug. 20 with positive increases in both gross and average. The Larry Falloon and Denis Huberdeau-consigned gelding out of Nickel Candy topped the sale after Arthur Roy spent CA $25,000 (US$18,445, CA$1=US$0.7378) to acquire the yearling.

C.T.H.S. reports 16 of the 38 yearlings on offer were sold (42%) for a gross of CA$183,500 ($135,462) at an average price of CA$11,469 ($8,467). During the 2022 edition, 17 of the 32 yearlings through the ring were sold (53%) for a gross of CA$170,150, averaging CA$10,008 per head.

This year's sale topper (Hip 9) is out of the winning Silver Deputy mare Nickel Candy and bred in Manitoba by his consignors. His City Zip  half brother, Manewal , is stakes placed in the 2012 Gold Rush Futurity at Arapahoe Park, and he boasts nine other winning siblings. His 3-year-old full brother, Sugar Daddy Jack , won Aug. 14 at Assiniboia Downs for owner/trainer Shelley Brown.

The second highest offering (Hip 23) came from the Ziprick Thoroughbreds draft, the CA$23,500 Speculating  filly out of Talkn Til Midnight . John Ganas signed the sales slip for the dark bay or brown out of the winning Broken Vow mare. The yearling is half sibling to 3-year-old winner Valid Defence  by A Shin Forward  .
