Poignant Win for Connections of Rock Scene

Hours after the June 3 death of Escena, champion older mare of 1998, her 4-year-old son Rock Scene won a maiden special weight event at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course .
Dede Snowden, who owned Escena as a broodmare, suspects Escena's spirit was with her colt Rock Scene Wednesday evening.
"I guess she was there," Snowden said in an e-mail after Rock Scene cruised to a four-length victory in the third race, a six-furlong test on the main track, at Penn National June 3.
A 4-year-old son of Rock Hard Ten, Rock Scene was bred in Kentucky by Snowden's friend, Madeleine Pickens, whose late husband, Allen Paulson, campaigned Escena. Rock Scene is trained by Todd Beattie, and jockey Clinton Potts guided him to victory.
Champion Escena Dead at Age 22 in Kentucky
A winner of four grade I races in her career, Escena earned champion older mare honors in 1998. A pensioned daughter of Strawberry Road, she died at Diamond A Farms near Versailles, Ky.
