Adios Muchachas breaks her maiden at Canterbury Park

Central Florida breeders Liz and Norman Wilson watched their homebred filly, Adios Muchachas , storm home a winner on the grass Aug. 26 on first asking at Canterbury Park in a five-furlong maiden special weight. She came home an impressive 2 1/2 lengths ahead of the field in a final time of :57.67 for owners Mike Hellendrung and Tim Padilla.

Multiple stakes-winning trainer/owner Padilla sourced the Adios Charlie   filly just two months prior for $7,000 at the June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale at Ocala Breeders from the Wilson's Oakleaf Farm draft. During the under tack show, the bay filly sped an eighth mile in 11 flat.

"She wasn't a very big filly but looked like she was going to be quick, and someone got a good deal on her," Liz Wilson recalled. "She was a tough cookie; she had her mind about her and liked to train. She was all about business and professional. You would go to tack her up, and she would try to pull your flak jacket off; she has a bit of character and is a fun filly to be around. Always spicy."

Norman added: "The biggest thing with her was you had to pick and choose your time to work around her because she would bite and kick; she was tough. Our rider loved her from the first day he got on her and thought she was special."

The Canterbury Park-based trainer put the new acquisition through six works ahead of her Aug. 26 win, where she recorded an Equibase Figure of 65. During Saturday's race, she got out in front from the gate and tracked the leading pair from the outside before pushing ahead at the three-eighths pole. She grazed a competitor in the stretch but then kicked clear and rallied for the wire.

"All of our 2-year-olds that we consigned this year, we broke ourselves," Norman said. "We are a full-service farm and do everything."

The Wilsons run Oakleaf Farm, a full-service facility offering breaking and training, broodmare, and foal services in Ocala, Fla. This year at the October Yearlings Sale at OBS, Oct. 10-11, they will be offering the full sister to Adios Muchachas. The fillies are out of the In Summation mare All Summed Up, a winner and earner of $78,060, a full sibling to grade 2 stakes placed Summation Time , and grade 3 placed St. Joe , by Trippi.
