An increase in gross sales driven by a larger catalog and an increase in the number of horses selling for six figures were among the highlights of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's Premier Yearling Sale held Aug. 30 in Ontario.

A total of 168 horses sold for CA$4,017,790 (US$2,967,700, CA$1.00=US$.74), which produced a CA$23,915 (US$17,665) average and a CA$15,000 (US$11,080) median for the sale held at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion. Gross sales were up 4.7% due to the larger catalog but the larger number sold lowered the average by 6.5%.

The top of the market remained strong with seven horses selling for CA$100,000 or more, led by a CA$150,000 gray or roan colt (Hip 82) who is a full brother to Canadian Horse of the Year and multiple champion Pink Lloyd . Nancy Guest bought the colt by Old Forester  out of the stakes-placed Great Gladiator  daughter Gladiator Queen  out of breeder John Carey's T.C. Westmeath Stud Farm consignment.

"This year's catalog was one of the largest in recent years attracting over 250 entries," said Peter Berringer, president and sales chair for CTHS Ontario. "It's been a great few days with our four CTHS Sales Stakes run on Aug. 27 where we witnessed My Boy Prince , who was last year's sale topper, winning the CTHS Simcoe Stakes by an impressive 14 lengths. My Boy Prince is now one of the leading 2-year-olds in training across North America, with a 95 Beyer Figure."
