The Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association conducted another record-breaking sale Aug. 31, with gross proceeds exceeding $800,000 for a second consecutive year at its Fall All Age Sale.
From 56 horses sold, the sale held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds grossed $865,700 and generated an average of $15,459. Yearlings made up a majority of the horses offered, accounting for 52 sold for a record gross of $844,300. The yearling average, also a record, was $15,930 and the median $8,500.
Last year's fall sale generated $810,900 in gross sales, which was nearly double the gross sales from this sale's 2021 edition. The 2022 sale also set a yearling average record of $15,719, surpassing by 27% the previous record of $12,363 set in 2019.
This year's sale produced two $50,000 co-sale-toppers. Tom Allen bought the first to sell for this price, a Maximus Mischief colt (Hip 17) that was consigned by Iowa State University on behalf of H. Allen Poindexter and Allen. The colt is out of the Liaison daughter Miss Waikiki, who is a half sister to stakes winner Honolulu (Maclean's Music ) and to stakes-placed winner and 2019 Iowa Horse of the Year Kauai (Girolamo ). The mare also is a full sister to stakes-placed winner Glitzy Lady .
Efrain Mayorga was the next buyer to go to $50,000, this time for Hip 45, a gelded son of Flameaway named Brasa, who is out of the stakes winner and stakes producer Swede (Yankee Victor). Brasa also was consigned by ISU.
