Pin Oak Stud owners Jim and Dana Bernhard were determined to have the last hand up for the son of Uncle Mo , consigned as Hip 528, to the third session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. After spirited bidding, the Hunter Valley Farm consigned colt sold for a cool $1 million. The colt was the first purchase of the sale for Pin Oak Stud.
"It's fantastic; a great price for the horse, well above our expectations," Adrian Regan of Hunter Valley Farm said. "He's a lovely colt; very straightforward, typical of Uncle Mo. He is a solid horse and never had a problem. I wish them the very best of luck."
The colt is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Flighty Almighty and from the family of British group runners Wall of Sound , Boomer , Uncle Bryn , and The Cheka .
Matt Wienmann of Equine Analysis, who advises the Bernhards, was on hand to recount the standout individual.
"He's an Uncle Mo colt; he's beautiful and had really nice physiology," Wienmann said. "We thought here in Book 2, Uncle Mo has been having an incredible sale next to Into Mischief, so we knew he would cost, but we are glad to have him.
"Book 1 was very strong, probably the strongest I have seen in my lifetime," Wienmann commented. "You will have to pay when it's a good one, and we hope this one is good. We will keep shopping for a while, see what's in here, and try to pick out some gems."
The colt was bred in Kentucky by Chasemore Farm and will be heading to the Bernhard's Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, which they purchased in Nov. of 2022 after the passing of Miss. Josephine Abercrombie.
Wienmann added: "I first saw him a few days ago; I went back a few times, I had my team (Equine Analysis) look at him. Dana saw him yesterday; he's a lovely colt. He has a lot of Uncle Mo about him; he looks a lot like his sire, and if he's anything like him, we will be pretty happy."
Later in the day Wednesday, Pin Oak Stud made three more purchases, including a Munnings colt, consigned as Hip 643 by Denali Stud, for $225,000. Bred in Kentucky by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, the colt out of stakes winner Northern Station is half sibling to the Hutcheson Stakes (G3) winner Barbados , by Speightstown .
The next purchase at $550,000 came from Bluewater Sales, a Tiz the Law colt (Hip 668) out of Bayakoa Stakes (G3) and Doubledogdare Stakes (G3) placed Promise of Spring . Rowland Hancock bred the colt in Kentucky and sold him during the Fasig-Tipton November Sale last year for $125,000 to RDO/MRJ Thoroughbreds.
The couple added a Medaglia d'Oro colt for $175,000 to their roster, consigned as Hip 733 by Gainesway; the colt is out of the stakes-winning Colonel John mare Student Body . Gary Broad of Walmac Farm bred the colt in Kentucky, who carries the Fappiano mare Jeano under the third dam.
