Description:

The Lexington Herald-Leader Kentucky "Sportsman of the Year" for 2013 is University of Louisville basketball coach and Thoroughbred owner Rick Pitino.

While guiding the Cardinals to a national championship is Pitino's most celebrated accomplishment of 2013, the story on his selection in a vote of state sports writers notes that he also was a partner in the ownership group of Goldencents, who won last year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I.).

Pitino landed on the cover of the April 27, 2013 Blood-Horse and his long-time interest in horse racing is profiled in a story by Lenny Shulman.

Other horse racing figures landing in the top 25 of voting for 2013 were Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)-winning trainer Shug McGaughey, who placed 11th, and Eclipse Award-winning owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who ranked 12th.
