The overnight television rating for the June 6 Belmont Stakes presented by DraftKings (gr. I), which produced the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years in American Pharoah, was down slightly from last year, according to The Nielsen Company.
The race portion of the broadcast from 6:15-7:15 p.m. EDT on NBC generated an overnight rating and share of 12.3/27, down from 12.9 last year when California Chrome failed in his bid for the Triple Crown. NBC reported, however, that 2014-15 mark the first time the Belmont has produced successive overnight ratings in excess of 12.
This year's race at Belmont Park posted the highest metered market rating for a Saturday afternoon sporting event since NBC's telecast of the Ravens-Patriots AFC divisional playoff game Jan. 10 of this year.
The New York market, the home of the Belmont Stakes, registered a 16.6 rating/36 share, up 5% from last year's Belmont (15.8/37) and the second-highest Belmont in the market behind only Smarty Jones' Triple Crown attempt in 2004 (20.5/38).
