McKulick wins the Waya Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

The stakes action at Aqueduct Racetrack Oct. 7 kicked off with a familiar sight—that being Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables winning a graded stakes race for female grass horses when McKulick  emerged triumphant in the $200,000 Waya Stakes (G3T).

Brown and Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables did more than win. They also started the runner-up in Idea Generation , who fended off her stablemate before being outkicked by two lengths down the stretch. Racing during a rainstorm, McKulick raced 1 3/8 miles in 2:20.10 on a yielding turf course that had already been soaked in the lead-up to Saturday's race.

Sister Otoole  and Parnac  completed the order of finish in a short field depleted by scratches.

The winner, bred in Britain by Essafinaat UK Limited, paid $2.80 to win as the heavy favorite. She earned $186,000 to boost her career bankroll to $1,615,720 and improved her record to 5-5-2 in 13 starts.

Out of the Makfi  mare Astrelle , McKulick is a 4-year-old daughter of the Juddmonte stallion Frankel , who stood the 2023 season at Banstead Manor Stud in Britain for £175,000.

  • "She really liked the soft ground. I think she appreciated it and the pace," jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said.
  • Brown indicated the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Santa Anita Park is under consideration for McKulick. "I think going a mile and a quarter back to two turns would be good for her, if there's pace like there should be going back to two turns," he said.
