The second session of the Ocala Breeders' October Yearling Sale Oct. 11 saw a son of champion OBS graduate Mitole , consigned by Sue Vacek, go to Quarter Pole Enterprises at $250,000. The colt topped both Wednesday's second session and the entire sale.
The dark bay or brown colt, consigned as Hip 507, is a half brother to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Midnight Stroll , out of Midnight Magic, by champion OBS graduate Midnight Lute .
Quarter Pole Enterprises also signed for a son of Global Campaign consigned by Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent) for $150,000. The bay colt, Hip 745, is out of OBS graduate Maid in Heaven , by Yes It's True, a full sister to graded stakes winner Yesbyjimminy .
The closing session at OBS reported 191 yearlings changed hands of the 287 through the ring Wednesday, for a gross of $3,969,100, down 10% over the previous year. The average price rose 21.8% to $20,781 and the $15,000 median climbed 13.4%. There were 96 horses who failed to attain their reserve to represent an RNA rate of 33.4%.
Last year's sale offered 209 select yearlings during the first session; this year's sale consisted of open yearlings both days.
After the second day of selling last year OBS reported 256 of the 367 horses had sold for receipts of $4,367,900. An average price of $17,062 and a $13,000 median was recorded. An RNA rate of 30.2% accounted for 111 yearlings who remained unsold.
Cumulatively over the past two days of selling 386 yearlings of the 587 through the ring were sold for a $7,692,100 gross, posting a 27.2% decline year-over-year, suitable for a $19,928 average and a median of $12,500, down 26.7% and 31%, respectively. The 201 horses who failed to attain their reserve represent an RNA rate of 34.2%.
At the conclusion of last year's sale 389 yearlings had changed hands of 554 to go under the hammer for a $10,571,900 gross, good for an average of $27,177 and a $18,000 median. An RNA rate of 29.8% accounted for the 165 horses who failed to sell.
Consignor Beth Bayer sold 23 horses Wednesday for receipts of $448,000, at an average of $19,478 per head, to be the session-leading consignor, as well as the sales leader, after two days of selling, with gross receipts of $822,700 for 40 horses sold. Quarter Pole Enterprises made two purchases for final figures of $400,000 at an average of $200,000 to be the leading buyer on Day 2 and the sale's leading buyer.
"It picked up a little more today, than it did yesterday," OBS director of sales, Tod Wojciechowski commented. "However, we are not satisfied with the overall results."
"We did see some diversification in our buyers today," said Wojciechowski. "The Koreans were active and we had some end users buying today, and we are always supported well by our local pinhookers."
The next sale for OBS will be the Winter Mixed and Horses of Racing Age Sale, Jan. 23-24, with an under tack preview Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. ET.
