Bentornato wins the FTBOA Florida Sire Dr. Fager Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Leon King Stable's Bentornato , unbeaten in three starts and a dual stakes winner, receives his stiffest test Oct. 21 in the $200,000 Affirmed Division of the FTBOA Sire Series at Gulfstream Park.

The seven-furlong race is the second leg for males, following the Sept. 9 Dr. Fager Division in which the Jose D'Angelo trainee romped by 7 1/2 lengths over six furlongs under regular rider Emisael Jaramillo. The series is for the progeny of Florida stallions.

Besides racing over a longer distance Saturday, Bentornato faces a deep field that includes stakes-winning Mattingly  and Hurricane Nelson , a twice-started maiden from New York with lofty speed figures.

  • A son of Bucchero  , Mattingly tries dirt for the first time after racing exclusively on turf and synthetic at distances ranging from five to 5 1/2 furlongs for trainer Joe Orseno and owners Ironhorse Racing Stable and Harlow Stables.
  • "We've been saying that we think he'll stretch out, so I think he'll handle the distance fine," Orseno said. 

R Harper Rose Brings Blazing Speed into Susan's Girl

A couple of races earlier in the eighth race, 2-year-old fillies race in the $200,000 FTBOA Susan's Girl Division, also at seven furlongs.

The speedy R Harper Rose , 2-for-2 for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and owners Averill Racing and Two Eight Racing, appears the likely favorite over FTBOA Florida Sire Desert Vixen Stakes winner Welcome Back  and Kentucky invader Honey Dijon .
