Probable Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) favorite Arcangelo had what will likely be his final timed workout in advance of the most prestigious dirt race for 3-year-olds and up, breezing a half-mile in :47 2/5 Oct. 25 at Santa Anita Park.
"Very pleased with what we saw today," trainer Jena Antonucci said. "We were looking to throw him up on his toes a little bit more; we've done a ton of foundational work and daily work so to have something a little bit quicker today, I'm sure he'll be very full of himself coming into the race."
Arcangelo will be facing older horses for the first time in the Nov. 4 Classic. The gray or roan Arrogate colt typically gets 10 days between works as well as between a final work and a race. Antonucci described Arcangelo as a smart horse "who takes care of himself" and doesn't need as many breezes to stay fit and engaged.
"The 10-day cycle between breezes and going into races just seems to suit him and his personality," she said.
Responding to multiple questions from reporters about the prospect of Arcangelo continuing to race at 4, Antonucci insisted that conversation is happening "above my pay grade."
"Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of details to offer," Antonucci said. "There is not a decision made—and I cannot say that loud enough and clear enough—there is not a decision made yet on what his 2024 will look like, if he will stand next year or race next year."
Lane's End Farm announced last week that they had secured the rights to stand Arcangelo when the time comes.
