Dr. Schivel , a grade 1 winner at 2 and 3, will retire to Taylor Made Stallions after the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), the farm announced Oct. 31.
The millionaire and 5-year-old son of Violence won or placed in seven graded stakes and ranks among the top sprinters in the country. He is 5-1 in the Sprint morning line and coming into the Nov. 4 race at Santa Anita Park off his second win in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G2). A stud fee will be announced following the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to stand Dr. Schivel in partnership with Tim Cohen, Dean Reeves, and Bill Branch," said Taylor Made's Travis White. "It's very special to have a horse that was talented and precocious enough to win a grade 1 at 2 and then come back to win another grade 1 as a 3-year-old beating older horses. Dr. Schivel, who has defeated 13 grade 1 winners in his career, has been a sound, extremely consistent horse, and his Breeders' Cup Sprint as a 3-year-old was a remarkable performance.
"He has remained in grade 1 form throughout his racing career, and (trainer) Mark Glatt said Dr. Schivel has been all class from day one. He is a big, good-looking son of Violence and breeders will really like what they see."
Dr. Schivel is campaigned by Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, and Branch. He burst onto the scene as a 2-year-old, romping to a 5 3/4-length victory in a maiden special weight before capturing the Del Mar Futurity (G1) by 1 3/4 lengths over eventual graded stakes winners Spielberg and Weston .
At 3, Dr. Schivel joined the best sprinters in the country by beating older horses in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar and in his first victory in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. In the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint, he withstood the rigors of :21.91 and :44.11 opening fractions to be leading in the stretch, only to be pipped by a nose at the wire by Aloha West but finish ahead of 2021 champion male sprinter Jackie's Warrior . The final time was 1:08.49.
In the Sept. 30 renewal of the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, Dr. Schivel defeated graded stakes winner Speed Boat Beach and grade 1 winner Arabian Lion in another strong effort, blitzing six furlongs in 1:08.49. Dr. Schivel kicked off this year's campaign with a wire-to-wire allowance score at six furlongs at Santa Anita, where he earned a 109 Equibase Speed Figure, one of nine triple-digit ESF performances throughout his career.
Dr. Schivel is the second-highest earner for Violence, who ranks among the top 10 by number of black-type stakes winners on the North American general sires list. Violence also is the sire of reigning champion 2-year-old male and four-time grade 1 winner Forte and of grade 1 winner Volatile , whose first-crop yearlings this year produced the third-highest average for his sire class.
Branch and Arnold Hill bred Dr. Schivel in Kentucky out of the Mining for Money winner Lil Nugget, who is a half sister to grade 1 winner and millionaire Ultra Blend .
