Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International went to $4.2 million to buy Sauterne (Hip 178), a French-bred 3-year-old daughter of Kingman (GB) and a Jean-Pierre Dubois homebred, out of the Nov. 7 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Narvick bought the filly for Grand Stud in Japan, which will add her to its broodmare band.
Sauterne won the Prix du Moulin (G1) by a length, was second in the Prix Jean Prat (G1) and third in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1). Sauterne is out of the Aragorn mare Salicorne, a half sister to French highweight, 2011 Eclipse champion grass mare, and multiple stakes producer Stacelita. A four-time group 1 winner, Stacelita won the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) and Flower Bowl Stakes (G1T) for owner Martin Schwartz and trainer Chad Brown.
"She has a classic pedigree, as you can see, she is very fluid and was a great racehorse in France—she beat the colts. The colt that was second to her just won a group 1 race at Ascot by six lengths. Her form is outstanding," said de Seroux, referring to Big Rock , who won the Oct. 21 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1).
De Seroux added that Sauterne is likely to be bred in Kentucky before being shipped overseas.
Sauterne, consigned by Nicky Drion Thoroughbreds, was the third-highest-priced broodmare/broodmare prospect during the one-day sale.
De Seroux also bought Hip 206 for Grand Stud, the grade 1 winner And Tell Me Nolies who sold for $2.3 million. Indian Creek consigned the daughter of Arrogate who won the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) for owner Peter Redekop and trainer Peter Miller. The filly also won the Chandelier Stakes (G2) and went on at 3 to be runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) and Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3) and third in the San Clemente Stakes (G2T). She has compiled a 3-2-1 record from 11 starts and earned $510,300.
Lara Run bred And Tell Me Nolies out of the grade 1-placed, grade 3 winner Be Fair (Exchange Rate), who is a half sister to grade 1 winner and Preakness Stakes (G1) runner-up Macho Again .
