One in Vermillion, who closed to win the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course this summer, has been retired due to a fetlock injury, according to a report in Daily Racing Form.
Owner Jonathan Kalman told DRF the 3-year-old underwent successful surgery Nov. 6. He had worked two days earlier at Zia Park in New Mexico. No stud deal has yet been finalized, Kalman told DRF.
A California-bred son of Army Mule , One in Vermillion won six of 12 starts and $653,840, running across the country from Santa Anita Park to Saratoga Race Course, and as well as at Turf Paradise, Sunland Park, Canterbury Park, Prairie Meadows and Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.
The Esteban Martinez trainee's last race came in the Aug. 26 H. Allen Jerkens, which was marred by the fatal breakdown of leader New York Thunder with about a sixteenth of a mile remaining. One in Vermillion won the race with seven furlongs in 1:22.63 under Irad Ortiz Jr.
Earlier this year, One in Vermillion won black-type events in the Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita and the Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park. He was also a multiple black-type winner at age 2.
Bred by Richard Barton Enterprises out of the Any Given Saturday mare Given Star , One in Vermillion was a $26,000 yearling purchase from the Few Acre Farm consignment to the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Fall Mixed Sale in 2021.
