This year’s edition of the Grade 1 Donn Handicap attracted a deep field of 11 older horses, and as a horse player that means one thing: a great betting field. All eyes will be on Will Take Charge as he is looking to start 2014 with a bang in the $500,000 race, which will kick of “The Jockey Club Tour on Fox.”
Do I think Will Take Charge is ready to fire a big effort and win today? No. And that’s how I’m going to try to make some money with a $20 wager. I’m looking for a return of about $100 on this $20 investment.

Tune in to Fox Sports 1 at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday for coverage of the Donn Handicap and Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.

Two Bets:
$1 Exacta: 8 with All ($10)
My pick in the Donn is No. 8 Lea. He looked great in his first start of the year when winning the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope Stakes at Gulfstream Park under the direction of his new trainer Bill Mott. He was close to the lead, took control in the stretch and pulled away to a convincing win.
I like what he has going for him. He is 1-for-1 on a fast dirt track, his pedigree suggests he will continue to excel at longer distances, he gained experience on this course, he comes off the best performance of his career, he looks to have improved since moving to his new trainer and shows three workouts since his last start. Instead of just betting $10 to win on him, I am going to play this exacta and look for a longshot to finish second.
$1 Trifecta: 8 with 5,9 with 1,2,3,5,6,9 ($10)
My second bet is going to be this trifecta with No. 8 Lea on top. For second place, I am going to use No. 5 River Seven and No. 9 Bourbon Courage. River Seven comes off a good-looking win at Gulfstream when winning by more than four lengths in only his second career start on the dirt. He has the potential to keep improving on the dirt.
RIVER SEVEN

Bourbon Courage was most recently seen running third behind River Seven when going off as the favorite. He’s finished in the top three in 11 of his 14 career starts and shows a good series of workouts leading up to this race. Tough to ignore him.
The third spot in my trifecta will round out with No. 1 Uncaptured (wide trip behind Lea in his last race when finishing fourth), No. 2 Will Take Charge (don’t think he can win today but can pick up a piece), No. 3 Revolutionary (he was expected to win last time out, let’s see how he improves today), No. 5 River Seven, No. 6 Romansh (big win in New York, only making 8th lifetime start, has upside) and No. 9 Bourbon Courage.
