Mahoning Valley Latest to Cancel Due to Arctic Cold

Live racing at Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course was canceled for Jan. 16 and 17 due to forecasted wind chill temperatures in the low single digits. Live racing is scheduled to resume Thursday, Jan. 18, with a first-race post time of 12:45 p.m. The simulcast theater will remain open.

Mahoning Valley Race Course races Monday through Thursday, with a first post time of 12:45 p.m. in January and February and a 12:55 p.m. first post time in March and April. Closing day for the 2024 winter/spring meet is April 13.

Racing was canceled for Jan. 15 at Sam Houston Race Park and Parx Racing due to inclement weather conditions and safety for all. Sam Houston closed its simulcast wagering Monday as well. 

Parx Racing also canceled training and racing for Tuesday and Wednesday when the area forecast calls for three to five inches of snow and temperatures down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind chill making it feel like 18 degrees. Live racing is scheduled to resume at Parx on Monday, Jan. 22, with a first post of 12:05 p.m.

In Houston, a hard freeze warning was called for Tuesday, with temperatures in the low to mid 20s. Freezing temperatures are expected to continue until Jan. 17, when sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s are projected.

Live racing at Sam Houston is scheduled to return on Friday, Jan. 19, with updates to be posted on shrp.com.
