Frederick Wiea4wting and Richard Kaster's Excaper is the lone graded winner in the $200,000 King Edward Stakes (Can-II) at Woodine June 21, when he will face six relatively inexperienced rivals in the mile turf test.
The 6-year-old Exchange Rate horse trained by Ian Black is winless in three graded tries this year, but has a 5-9-1 record from 25 career starts and dwarfs the field with $756,312 in earnings.
Excaper hasn't won since a victory in the Connaught Cup Stakes (Can-II) in May of 2014, but one of his near misses was last year's King Edward, when he was a half-length behind winner Grand Arch in second.
The main challenger could be Conquest Stables' Conquest Top Gun, who was a spot behind Excaper (fifth) in this year's Connaught Cup, after breaking in the air.
Along with Conquest Top Gun, Stacked Deck is the only other stakes winner in the field. The son of First Samurai is a four-time winner from 10 starts, all at Woodbine, including the 2014 Charlie Barley Stakes.
Stakes-placed Tower of Texas, allowance winners Eirigh and Best Bard, and maiden winner Platinum Glory complete the field.
