The Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale has cataloged 849 juveniles, including 41 in a complete dispersal of the prominent breeding and racing outfit Lothenbach Stables, for its three-day sale set for March 12-14. All sessions will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET.
A four-day under tack show will be run March 6-9 with the following schedule: hips 1-213 will breeze Wednesday; hips 214-426 will breeze Thursday; hips 427-639 on Friday; and, hips 640-853 will go Saturday. All four sessions begin at 8:00 a.m. The under tack show and the sale will be streamed live via the OBS website and BloodHorse.com.
Since the beginning of 2022, OBS March graduates have been on the board 363 times in black-type stakes, 118 of them in graded stakes and including 41 graded stakes wins.
The March sale catalog's front cover features C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable's multi-millionaire 5-year-old White Abarrio . A 2023 Horse of the Year finalist, the gray/roan horse is a three-time grade 1 stakes winner, taking the Florida Derby (G1) at 3 and the Whitney Stakes (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at 4. Trained by Rick Dutrow Jr. since the spring of 2023, he has compiled a 7-1-3 career record from 15 starts with $4,946,350 in earnings and is pointing toward the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) Feb. 24; Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud acquired a share of the horse in January. The son of Race Day is a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Summerfield (Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck), at the 2020 Winter Mixed Sale and then purchased for $40,000 out of the Nice and Easy Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2021 March sale after turning in an under tack eighth in :10 2/5.
The brightest new OBS March sale star is Zedan Racing Stables' Eclipse Award finalist Muth . After a sensational debut victory at Santa Anita Park in June, he took the American Pharoah Stakes (G1) in October and began his 3-year-old campaign with a victory in the recent San Vicente Stakes (G2). Consigned to the 2023 OBS March sale by Top Line Sales, he was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent, matching a sale record of $2 million after speeding an eighth in :09 3/5 during the under tack show. The 3-year-old colt by Good Magic , trained by Bob Baffert, has a 3-2-0 record from five starts and earned $716,600 to date.
Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman's Speed Boat Beach wrapped up his 3-year-old campaign with a victory in Santa Anita's Malibu Stakes (G1) in December. The multiple graded stakes-winning 4-year-old son of Bayern , also trained by Baffert, is now 4-1-0 from seven starts and has earned $498,000. He's also a two-time OBS graduate, sold by Stuart Morris at the 2021 October Yearling Sale and then purchased for $200,000 out of the Really and Truly Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2022 March sale after working an eighth in :09 3/5.
Kazuo Kato's millionaire Jasper Krone is a two-time graded stakes winner in Japan, with 2023 victories in the Kitakyushu Kinen (G3) and the CBC Sho (G3). The 5-year-old son of Frosted , trained by Hideyuki Mori, has compiled a 6-1-2 record from 17 starts and earned $1,230,427. At the 2021 OBS March Sale, he was purchased for $90,000 out of the Kings Equine consignment after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5.
