Undefeated Nysos jumped into the top spot on the NTRA top 3-year-old poll following a scintillating performance in the $201,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) Feb. 3 at Santa Anita Park.
The son of 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist pounced on the leaders entering the stretch and drew away to win by 7 1/2 lengths. Nysos has earned $216,600 through three starts for Baoma Corp. and is now a two-time grade 3 winner.
Voting by national media brought 30 first-place votes for Nysos and one first-place vote for grade 1 winner Muth , who was last seen winning the Jan. 6 San Vicente Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita.
Both Nysos and Muth are trained by Bob Baffert. Neither are eligible to run in the 150th Kentucky Derby as Baffert is suspended by Churchill Downs following the disqualification of Medina Spirit in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Neither Nysos nor Muth's owners chose to transfer to another trainer prior to the Jan. 29 deadline.
Champion Fierceness dropped to third on the poll following a disappointing third-place finish in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. Hades , the winner, is ranked fifth. Mystik Dan , winner of the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park, is in seventh while Uncle Heavy , winner of the Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack, tied for 10th place.
Among all Thoroughbreds, Pegasus World Cup (G1) winner National Treasure maintained his number one spot while receiving 18 first-place votes. Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner White Abarrio remains in second with 11 first-place votes and Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner Idiomatic , who received two first-place votes, moved into third.
