Jes Sikura, 22, son of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa's John Sikura, signed for his first horse Stateside Feb. 5 during the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. The Constitution colt was the highest-priced short yearling on Day 1 at $300,000. Four Star Sales consigned the colt out of Special Thanks as Hip 242, and Sikura signed under the partnership name Discovery Bay.
"He's a nice, smooth-moving Constitution colt," the younger Sikura said. "We purchased him for a new partnership and plan to wheel him back as a yearling this summer. We are pretty excited to see what happens. He was the first horse purchased for a client down south."
Bred in Kentucky by Cypress Creek Equine, the colt is half sibling to the Monmouth Oaks (G3)-placed winner Eve of War and from the impressive family of Pin Oak Stud's Bedanken and Much Obliged .
"He's probably going to be a bit of a late bloomer, being a late May foal," Sikura explained. "I thought he had good angles, and the horse was proportionate and a very smooth mover that is good-looking. I think he will develop into something big, strong, and attractive."
When asked if more purchases will be made for the Discover Bay group, Sikura said, "We have a few more horses on the list for tomorrow, so we will see what happens."
