Haras Santa Rita Da Serra's Barolo flew down the center of the track and won the Grande Premio Brasil (Brz-I) in a thrilling finish June 21 at Hipódromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro.
The race was one of two South American group events Sunday, offering automatic berths to Breeders' Cup races at
Keeneland this fall.
The Brazilian-bred son of
Northern Afleet outfinished
Consilium in a fierce stretch scuffle, winning by a half-length under Waldomiro Blandi to earn an automatic berth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) Oct. 31 at
Keeneland.
Barolo, who broke through for his first stakes win, was timed 2:34.48 for 1 1/2 miles on turf.
Como Quiera was third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Consilium, and group I winner Quinhao was fourth in the 15-horse field.
Barolo, a 4-year-old trained by Venancio Nahid, is out of the winning Vettori mare Offshore.
In Peru, Kentucky-bred Salama won the Cesar Del Río Suito (Per-III) at Hipódromo de Monterrico, qualifying for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) Oct. 30.
The 3-year-old
Desert Party filly, ridden by Edwin Talaverano, defeated Kentucky-bred
Azarenka by 1 1/4 length.
Broken Game was third, three lengths back.
The final time for 1 1/4 miles was 2:06.30.
Bred by Frankfort Park Farm, Salama is campaigned by Haras Santa Maria. Out of the Royal Academy mare Duchess Maggie, she was a $13,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Maria's Stable. Trackside Farm consigned as agent.
