The Tiz the Law colt consigned as Hip 529 breezes a furlong in :09 3/5 at the OBS March Under Tack Show

Over the first two days of the under tack show preceding the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, the fastest times for a furlong were :09 4/5 and those over quarter-mile registered :20 4/5.

On the third of four under tack days, March 8, times quickened with two clocked in :09 3/5 and another pair in :20 2/5 over a synthetic racetrack that generated rapid times.

The under tack programs precede the upcoming OBS sale that takes place March 12-14.

Zipping an Eighth

The fastest juveniles to breeze a furlong Thursday in :09 3/5 were:

  • Hip 448, a gray or roan Wavertree Stables-consigned filly by 2020 Metropolitan Handicap (G1) winner Vekoma  , whose first foals are 2-year-olds. Out of the winning Unbridled's Song mare Minnelli , she is a half sibling to five other runners of racing age, three of them starters and winners. Her most distinguished foal is the Distorted Humor gelding Afraidofthebunny , a winner of one of 12 starts and $40,538. Bred in Kentucky by trustee George Bates, Hip 448 was a $160,000 purchase last year at the September Yearling Sale at Keeneland by Red Wings, the pinhooking partnership of Wavertree Stables' Ciaran Dunne and horse owner Paul Reddam.
  • Hip 529, a bay colt consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent. Hip 529 is by Tiz the Law  , the Travers Stakes (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner of 2020. This juvenile colt, purchased by his consignors for $375,000 at Keeneland this past September, is out of the graded-placed Majesticperfection  mare Our Majesty , whose lone starter from two earlier foals is Monarch  (Tapit  ), who has twice been fifth in a pair of maiden starts this winter at Aqueduct Racetrack. Hip 529's dam, second in the 2017 Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) in her top black-type achievement, made $204,222. Hip 529 was bred in Kentucky by Sun Bloodstock Racing.

  • Hip 453, a dark bay or brown filly by Munnings   already named Racing Withthemoon. A registered Florida-bred consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent for breeder Peter Mirabelli, she is out of the unraced Majestic Warrior  dam Miss Majestic. Her two prior foals have both started, though neither has won or placed. Hip 453's second dam is graded winner Cassidy, who produced stakes-winning Cassidys Pride  (Medaglia d'Oro  ), a half sister to Miss Majestic.
  • A bay Justify   colt consigned as Hip 539 by Pick View, agent. His sire was the leading second-crop sire of 2023 and is currently second among third-crop sires of 2024 with statistics that take into account Saudi Cup (G1) totals. Bred in New York by Chester and Mary Broman, she was bought in September at Keeneland for $100,000 by Hoby Kight for Halona PH. Hip 539 is the first foal from her multiple stakes-winning Giant's Causeway dam Pauseforthecause , who showed in the 2020 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3) in her final start.

The final day of the under tack show is March 9, beginning at 8 a.m. ET. It will be streamed live at www.obssales.com and at www.bloodhorse.com.

The first of three consecutive days of the upcoming auction is Tuesday, beginning each day at 11 a.m. ET.

According to OBS, March Sale graduates have accounted for 120 graded stakes victories, including 14 grade 1s, since the beginning of 2018. Two notable March Sale alumni include grade 1 winners White Abarrio  and Muth .
