The Ocala Breeders' March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training offers the commercial market its initial look at the progeny of this year's freshman stallions. During the auction's second session March 13, a colt by Buck Pond Farm's freshman sire Shancelot   was among the day's standouts, fetching $650,000 from Bill Childs.

Consigned by Wavertree Stables (Ciaran Dunne), agent, the dark bay or brown colt (Hip 421) sped an eighth in :09 4/5 at the under tack preview. Bred in Kentucky by Memory Lane Racing, the colt was produced from the winning Flatter mare Magnolias in Bloom . She was a Glen Hill Farm homebred who won only one time, but it was her debut race, and she set a track record at Belmont Park going five furlongs on the turf in :57.04.

The colt was a $130,000 acquisition by Waves Bloodstock out of the Machmer Hall consignment at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He previously sold for $40,000 as a weanling at the 2022 Keeneland November Sale to Tollgate Farm out of the Buck Pond Farm consignment.

"He was a beautiful colt when we bought him (as a yearling)," said Dunne. "He matured just as you would want him to, and he performed on the racetrack."

At the sale's first session March 12, Hideyuki Mori went to $215,000 for Hip 131, a Shancelot colt out of the stakes-placed Twirling Candy   mare Cicada's Song . Bred in Kentucky by Crawford Farms, the colt provided an excellent return for consignor Jose Munoz, who purchased him for $17,000 from Preferred Equine at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale. The bay colt worked in :10.

Shancelot, a son of Shanghai Bobby , won three of six lifetime starts, including the 2019 Amsterdam Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course. He finished second in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) behind that year's champion male sprinter Mitole  . Shancelot stands at Buck Pond Farm in Versailles, Ky., for $5,000.
