Trainer Jacobson Reaches 1,000-Win Milestone

Description:
New York trainer David Jacobson reached the 1,000-win milestone June 18 when capturing Belmont Park's third race with Classic Salsa.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y. Jacobson saddled his first winner in 1976 at Monmouth Park and is perennially one of the top trainers on the New York Racing Association circuit. He has picked up year-end training titles in each of the past three years to go along with several individual meet titles. In 2013, Jacobson set a NYRA record for wins in a single year with 164.

"It was great to do it with a hard-hitting horse like Classic Salsa, who has won a lot of races for us," said Jacobson, who was unable to attend the races on his banner day. "I've been chasing 1,000 for a while now, and of course I get sick on the day I do it. It feels great, though, and now we'll look forward to the next 1,000."

Jacobson is the son of the late Howard "Buddy" Jacobson, five-time leading trainer in New York. He also worked for late Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel in California.

Jacobson owns Classic Salsa (by Two Step Salsa  ), the favorite who led from gate to wire in a three-quarter-length victory in the six-furlong race for $40,000 claimers.

In addition to the milestone win 1,000, Jacobson also has sent out 852 runners-up and 785 third-placed finishers. His starters have amassed purse earnings of $32.6 million.

Thus far this year, Jacobson has a 68-48-43 record from 296 starters that have earned more than $2.8 million.
