Charles Fipke's homebred Golden Soul, who was second in the 2013 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), will ship west for the first time for the $150,000 San Juan Capistrano Stakes (gr. IIIT) June 28 at Santa Anita Park.
The featured race on the Arcadia, Calif. track's closing day, the San Juan Capistrano covers 1 3/4 miles on the Santa Anita turf, beginning near the top of the downhill grass course with a trip all the way around the inner oval.
Trained by Dallas Stewart, the son of Perfect Soul has two allowance victories following his career-best graded finish in the Derby and crossed the wire third last time out in the 1 1/2-mile Louisville Handicap (gr. IIIT) on the Churchill Downs turf. The 5-year-old Golden Soul only has three victories from 23 starts, but leads the field of seven with $633,085 in earnings.
Brazilian-bred and French-raced Going Somewhere should be favored, however, coming off a game third-place finish in the 1 1/2-mile Charles Whittingham Stakes (gr. IIT) May 24 in his U.S. debut, only a length behind winner Ashleyluvssugar.
The only graded winner in the field is Customer Base, a 6-year-old mare running against six males in the San Juan Capistrano, but that victory came in the Robert J. Frankel Stakes (gr. IIT) in December of 2013. Since then, the daughter of Lemon Drop Kid has gone winless in eight straight stakes tries.
Multiple stakes winner Patriots Rule could also provide a threat from the rail, along with Jerry Hollendorfer trainee Decisive Edge. Both are coming off wins in their previous starts.
Crucero, who broke his maiden on the Santa Anita dirt at the $20,000 claiming level in February, has gone winless in five turf tries since. Tiz Futurity, a winner of two claiming races from 43 lifetime starts, is also entered and will break from the outside.
