Former Trainer Sandy Shulman Dies at 78

Former trainer Sanford "Sandy" Shulman, who won 804 races during his 29-year career, died June 21 at the age of 78, according to Santa Anita Park publicity.



Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Shulman was also a track and field star at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles before starting training in 1981.



Shulman-trained horses earned more than $20 million, including graded stakes winners Thirst for Peace, Abaginone, Champion Lodge, Pickle, and Uriab. His career-best win total came in 1994, when he won 79 races from 423 starts.



He is survived by his son, Leonard Shulman, daughter Eileen Daley, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.



Services for Shulman will be held at Mt. Sinai (5950 Forest Lawn Dr., in Los Angeles) at 11:30 a.m.  PT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation or the Downtown Dog Rescue.
