Dullahan remains an enigma in racing – three career wins, all of them coming in Grade 1 races. He’ll be back for a chance to score a repeat victory in Sunday’s TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and we figured this is a good opportunity to catch up on data from last year’s race, along with some his top competition.
As one might expect from a late-runner like Dullahan, the half-brother to 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird covered the longest trip in the 2012 Pacific Classic, going 18 feet more than Game On Dude and 63 feet more than Richard’s Kid, who did all his running on the rail. Winning in a new course-record time, Dullahan had the benefit of chasing a hot pace set by longshot Riveting Reason.
The half-mile and three-quarter splits in the 2012 Pacific Classic were the fastest in the six-race history of the event since the installation of Polytrack. Dullahan ran the final quarter in 23.69 seconds, the fourth-fastest of the 63 starters in these last six years. His final eighth in 11.77 seconds was the fastest in the history of the race on Polytrack and enough to catch the well-regarded Game On Dude, whose résumé now reflects a fourth and a second in the last two runnings.
Kettle Corn won the first graded stakes race of his career, the Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood, in December 2011. While seeming plenty likely to have more on the horizon, he was winless in graded stakes company since that Native Diver tally, contesting nine graded races and running behind Game On Dude on four occasions. He broke back into the black-type winner’s circle taking the 2013 San Diego Handicap when beating Paynter earlier in the meet, and put forth a series of impressive internal quarter-mile splits that seem to indicate he is top form.
After Kettle Corn recorded an opening quarter well off the early pace in 24.56 seconds, he managed three consecutive sub-24 segments (:23.49, :23.66, and :23.72) before catching Paynter. Overall, his last two furlongs were recorded in 23.98 seconds, and a final eighth in :12.14. The San Diego win was the second of Kettle Corn’s career at Del Mar at the distance of 1 1/16 miles, the other coming in September 2011 when he, coincidentally, also recorded a 23.98-second final quarter in an allowance event.
Jeranimo emerges from a dazzling display in the Eddie Read where the son of Congaree was last through the opening half-mile. Trakus recorded his first half-mile in 48.47 seconds and last half in 46.55 seconds, with the final eighth in 11.37 seconds.

Deceptive closing speed
Here’s something you don’t often see on turf at Del Mar – the three fastest finishers in a race finished sixth, ninth, and fifth, respectively. That’s exactly what happened in last Saturday’s fifth race, an allowance/optional claiming race at a mile.
Lil Bit O’Fun finished sixth, but had the fastest closing quarter in 22.76 seconds, while Gab Power was only ninth home, but second-fastest over the final two furlongs in 22.79 seconds. Fifth-placer Starspangled Heat was home in 22.88 seconds. The result of this relative oddity was the frenetic early speed set by eventual third-place finisher Camp Victory, who stretched the field early. Gab Power was more than 19 lengths behind Camp Victory after the opening quarter while Lil Bit O’Fun was more than 16 lengths back and Starspangled Heat settled more than 12 back. All three made up significant ground over the final quarter, but none could make an impression on the paying places.
