Times sped up considerably May 16 at the second under tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, Md.
Only one horse—Hip 12, a Volatile filly consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo—hit the :10 mark at the sale's first under tack show May 14 when hips 1-200 were scheduled to breeze. The May 15 under tack show was postponed due to rain, and the start of Thursday's breezes were delayed two hours for track maintenance.
Once the action started, colts by Street Boss and Vekoma were among those who capitalized on conditions. Hip 285, a Florida-bred colt by first-crop sire Vekoma, skipped over the Timonium surface as he put in a one-furlong work in :09 4/5.
The chestnut colt consigned by Wavertree Stables, agent, is the second foal out of Scion Power, an unraced sister to grade 3 winner Derwin's Star . Her first foal is the Malibu Moon 3-year-old colt Banded Rocket , who is unplaced in two stakes attempts but has two wins from five starts.
The Vekoma colt is a $175,000 pinhook out of the 2023 The July Sale, Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky sale of selected yearlings, where he was purchased by Waves Bloodstock.
Hip 314, a gray/roan Kentucky-bred Street Boss colt out of the winning Sky Mesa mare Snow Mesa , equaled that :09 4/5 clocking. Consigned by Longoria Training and Sales, Hip 314 was a $35,000 purchase at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Whereas only one horse hit the :21 1/5 mark for two furlongs at the opening-day under tack show—Hartley/DeRenzo's Authentic colt consigned as Hip 59—four horses recorded that time Thursday:
