Dornoch added to his immediate family's American classic credentials June 8 when the full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage captured a historic edition of the 156th Belmont Stakes (G1), run at 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga Race Course.
The colt is a son of Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa's Good Magic and out of the Big Brown mare Puca . A patient, stalking ride from jockey Luis Saez, who followed Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Seize the Grey through early fractions of :22.99 and :47.25 put them in the ideal spot exiting the second turn where Dornoch held off all challengers to win by three-quarters of a length. The final time was 2:01.64.
Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables' Mindframe , who was making his stakes debut, finished second and 8-5 favorite Sierra Leone finished a fast-closing third.
Dornoch paid $37.40, $17.60, and $3.10. Mindframe paid $6.80 and $4.20, while Sierra Leone paid $2.60.
