

Gerald A. Souto, a multiple stakes-winning trainer on the old New England circuit for five decades, died June 9. He was 83.
The Seekonk, Mass. resident was best known for conditioning the Massachusetts-bred Second Episode, the champion New England-bred horse of 1996. A local fan favorite, Second Episode won 13 black-type stakes races at Suffolk Downs from 1994-1998 and the horse's victories include three consecutive editions of the Rise Jim Stakes from 1996-1998.
From 1976-2012 Souto sent 5,155 horses postward for a record of 786-801-663 and $5,482,015 in purse earnings, according to Equibase.
He is survived by three daughters, Deborah Bowyer, Lorraine Lynch, and Gina Dineen; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Isabel DeClercq, Beverly Cote and Robert Souto.
Funeral services were held on June 13 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The family requests memorial gifts to St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
