Injured Jockey Selman Undergoes Back Surgery

Description:
Jockey Alyssa Selman is slowly recovering from back surgery after she was seriously injured in a racing accident June 27 at Assiniboia Downs in Canada.

Selman was slammed to the ground in the sixth race when her mount, Lord Jasmond, clipped heels and stumbled in midstretch as he was moving off the rail. The Swain gelding fell heavily, injuring the rider.

The indication from Selman's family is that the surgery was successful, but her road to recovery will be lengthy.

"The finality of her back injury cannot be stated at this time," the track said in a July 3 press release. "Alyssa is currently in stable condition at the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg."

Selman's mother told the Winnipeg Free Press that doctors think her daughter might not walk again.

"But sometimes they're wrong," she said.

The racing community will be holding a fund-raising event for Selman and her family July 19 at Assiniboia Downs main floor, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $15 and on sale at guest services, the Assiniboia Downs general office, VLT cashiers, or the horsemen's bookkeeper.

Trust funds for the 29-year-old mother of two have been set up at the Assiniboine Credit Union and Access Credit Union. Donations can be made to the "Alyssa Selman Trust Fund" at any branch in Manitoba. A trust fund is also being established at one of the major banks and the information will be posted at ASDowns.com once it has been completed.
