No Positives in June 2015 Economic Indicators

U.S. Thoroughbred racing's economic indicators for June 2015, released July 4 by Equibase Co., showed declines in the five key areas of wagering, purses, race days, races, and starts, compared with the same month in 2014.
Wagering dipped during June 2015, although off less than a quarter percent—0.23%—at $925,512,755, compared with $927,683,726 for June 2014, while the number of races showed a sharper decline at 7.86%, from 4,225 in June 2014 to 3,893.
The highlight of the month was the $134,839,391 all-sources handle on the 13-race Belmont Stakes Day program June 6, when American Pharoah's Triple Crown bid was on the line. The figure that was down about 10.2% from 2014's Belmont day program.
Wagering during in the second quarter of 2015 was the only figure in positive territory, showing a 3.52% gain from $2,951,674,063 during last year's second quarter, to $3,055,547,544.
Starts for June 2015 showed the biggest decline from June 2014, down 8.30% to 28,763 starts versus 31,368.
Year-to-date figures also showed declines, including a 0.52% decrease in wagering on U.S. races, which decreased 5.83%.
