Multiple graded stakes winner Modernist , a 7-year-old son of leading sire Uncle Mo , will shuttle to Chile and stand at Haras Dadinco, announced Bowling Bloodstock Aug. 2. The deal was brokered by Matt Bowling and J.P. Sullivan of Sullivan Bloodstock.
Modernist raced as a homebred for Marty and Pam Wygod. With trainer Bill Mott, he won the 2020 Risen Star Stakes (G2) and ran third in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at 3 and went on at 4 to win the 2021 Excelsior Stakes (G3). He added runner-up finishes in the Pimlico Special Match Series Stakes (G3) and Challenger Stakes (G3) to his résumé before being retired with a 3-2-2 record from 11 starts and $576,300 in earnings.
In 2022 he entered stud at Darby Dan Farm and bred 280 mares during his first three seasons, standing for a published fee of $10,000 each year.
Modernist is represented by his first yearlings in 2024, starting the sales season off well with a $100,000 colt out of Kodiac Gal at Fasig-Tipton's The July Sale, its selected yearlings sale in Lexington. The sire will be represented by three yearlings in Fasig-Tipton's New York-Bred Yearlings Sale Aug. 11-12 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The Wygods bred Modernist out of the Bernardini mare Symbolic Gesture, a daughter of multiple grade 1 producer and 2009 Broodmare of the Year Sweet Life. This active family has produced Soul Provider, a multiple stakes winner in Venezuela.
