U.S. Pari-Mutuel Handle Down Slightly in June

United States Thoroughbred racing's economic indicators for June 2015, released July 4 by Equibase Co., showed declines in pari-mutuel handle, purses, race days, races, and starts compared with the same month in 2014.
Year-to date wagering, which includes commingled handle on all U.S. Thoroughbred races, was down less than 1% compared with the first six months of 2014.
Wagering dipped during June 2015, though it was off less than a quarter percent—0.23%—at $925,512,755, compared with $927,683,726 for June 2014. The number of races showed a sharper decline at 7.86%, from 4,225 in June 2014 to 3,893.
The highlight of the month was the $134,839,391 all-sources handle on the 13-race Belmont Stakes (gr. I) day program June 6, when American Pharoah's Triple Crown bid was on the line. But that figure was down about 10.2% from the 2014 Belmont day program.
Wagering during in the second quarter of 2015 increased 3.52% from $2,951,674,063 during last year's second quarter to $3,055,547,544.
Starts for June 2015 showed the biggest decline from June 2014, down 8.30% to 28,763 starts versus 31,368.
Year-to-date figures also showed declines, including a 0.52% decrease in wagering on U.S. races, which decreased 5.83%.
