Naughty Rascal dug in gamely through the lane to win the $95,000 Proud Man Stakes Aug. 10 at Gulfstream Park to remain undefeated and give second-crop sire Rogueish his first black-type stakes winner.
Naughty Rascal, a Florida-bred 2-year-old colt, won his debut July 21 at Gulfstream in state-bred maiden special weight company under jockey Edwin Gonzalez. Ridden by Gonzalez again in the Proud Man, Naughty Rascal bumped at the start and was in fifth place early.
He commenced a sweeping three-wide move on the turn of the six-furlong race, and with favored Classic of Course on his outside hip, Naughty Rascal batted all the way to the wire and scored a gritty, neck victory. Final time was 1:11.92 on the dirt.
Trained by Gerald Bennett for Mr Pug and J.P.G. 2, Naughty Rascal was a $39,000 purchase from de Meric Sales at the Ocala Breeders' March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. He has earned $77,650 with his two wins.
Naughty Rascal is out of the unraced Smarty Jones mare Baby Doll and is a half to stakes-placed, 11-time winner Awesome Anywhere (Awesome of Course ). He was bred by Edward Seltzer, Beverly Anderson, and Helen and Joseph Barbazon.
Rogueish, by Into Mischief , also was undefeated, but he made just one start, winning a maiden special weight at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots by 6 3/4 lengths in November 2018. He was trained by Steve Asmussen for owner/breeders Edward A. Seltzer, Beverly Anderson, and Krista Seltzer.
Rogueish is out of the grade 3-winning Rahy mare Verdana Bold . He is a half to stakes winner Ghalia (Medaglia d'Oro ) and a full brother to stakes winner Lucrezia .
Rogueish retired to stud in 2020 and initially stood at Oakton Farm Stallions for a fee of $2,500. His fee has remained at $2,500, but he stood at Solera Farm in Florida from 2022 through the 2024 breeding season.
