Tested by a strong stretch run to his inside from Dynamic Sky, Aldous Snow proved up to the challenge as he held off that rival to win the $174,600 Singspiel Stakes (gr. IIIT) for a second straight year Sunday, July 5 on the Woodbine turf.
After Money Talker led the well-bunched field through a mile in 1:40.32, Sam-Son Farm homebred Aldous Snow rallied three wide to take command in early stretch while John Oxley's Dynamic Sky soon found room inside for his rally. While challenged, Aldous Snow held sway through the long stretch to post a narrow victory, completing 1 1/2 miles in 2:27.55 on firm turf.
"He's a very easy horse to relax. He goes anywhere you want," said winning rider Eurico Rosa da Silva, adding that the winner was ready for the late challenge from Dynamic Sky. "He's a beautiful horse, he was in great shape. When I asked him he really responded, he fought very hard in the stretch. I had a lot of horse."
Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Hyper, the 3-2 favorite in the field of eight, rallied outside to pick up third, 2 1/2 lengths behind the runner-up.
In last year's Singspiel, Aldous Snow posted a nose victory over Perfect Timber with Dynamic Sky another 2 1/2 lengths back in third. Sunday's victory for Aldous Snow snapped a five-race losing streak for the 6-year-old Theatrical gelding dating back to last year's Singspiel.
Aldous Snow paid $12.60 to win, $5.10 to place, and $3.20 to show. Dynamic Sky returned $3.60 and $2.50, while Hyper also returned $2.50 to show.
"I think he came into this race better than he's come into any race in his life," said winning trainer Malcolm Pierce. "We had confidence. And I'm glad no rain came and he got the turf he liked, firm turf."
Bred in Ontario by Sam-Son, Aldous Snow is out of the Quiet American mare Brave Destiny. All five of Aldous Snow's career victories have come on the Woodbine turf, where last year he set a course record for 1 1/16 miles in winning an allowance race in 1:38.62 and in 2012 he finished second in the Breeders' Stakes.
