Del Rosario became the first winner for first-crop sire Gunnevera in rallying from last to take a maiden claiming race over a mile and 70 yards Aug. 24 on Tapeta at Gulfstream Park.
Trailing until nearing the stretch, 2-year-old filly Del Rosario kicked into gear leaving the second turn. She advanced into fourth by midstretch and surged into the lead late before registering a victory by three-quarters of a length amid a driving rainstorm. She was timed in 1:44.74 for the distance under apprentice Melvis Gonzalez, paying $6 to win against maiden $35,000 claimers.
Owned and raced by Just For Fun Stable, the Florida-bred out of the Ocean Indy mare Indy Pie earned $21,700 to increase her earnings to $22,400 in two starts. The Ruben Sierra trainee had been fifth against straight maidens at Gulfstream last month in her debut.
Late-running Gunnevera, a winner of more than $5.5 million when racing from 2016-19, captured six races in 21 starts, including three at the graded level: the Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3), both in 2016, and the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) the following year. He also placed in the 2017 Travers Stakes (G1) and 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), among other top-level stakes.
He entered stud in 2021, and his first foals are now 2-year-olds. A 10-year-old Dialed In horse, he stood this past breeding season at Pleasant Acres Stallions near Morriston, Fla., for a $6,000 fee.
