Euros Zulu Kingdom, Cavallo Bay Lead With Anticipation

European imports are common in turf stakes, particularly races for older horses, which are often filled with those that previously competed overseas. Summer stakes races for juveniles tend to be an exception, though one would not know it from the entries in the Aug. 29 With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course.

Two of the nine turf entrants in the $175,000, 1 1/16-mile race—Zulu Kingdom  and Cavallo Bay —have raced exclusively overseas. Zulu Kingdom won first time out at Saint-Cloud in France for Andre Fabre and now races for United States connections: trainer Chad Brown and owners Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, Bill Strauss, and Michael Caruso. Cavallo Bay, meanwhile, has notched two wins in Britain after a debut fifth there for British trainer Charlie Appleby and owner/breeder Godolphin. Appleby has a division of runners in the U.S.

Brown said he has been pleased by how Zulu Kingdom, an Irish-bred son of Ten Sovereigns , has trained for him this summer.

"He fits into our program, and he's ready to run," he said.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has entered two on turf in a bid for a record-extending seventh win in the With Anticipation: the maiden Nudge  and the fast main-track maiden winner Tenacious Leader . The latter could scratch to await the $1 million Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile Sept. 8 at Kentucky Downs.

The With Anticipation also includes two main-track-only entrants, including the flashy Pletcher-trained debut winner Uncaged .
