The owner-trainer-jockey triumvirate of Peter Redekop B.C., Barbara Heads, and Armadeo Perez made it back-to-back wins in the Canadian Derby (G3) at Century Mile Aug. 25.
Having won a year ago with the Arrogate colt Abeliefinthislivin , the trio found success this year with August Rain .
By Sungold , August Rain rallied from near the mid-back of the field of 11 to capture the 1 1/4-mile race by 2 3/4 lengths.
August Rain and Perez settled in near the back. They had to work to keep August Rain from falling to the back of the field as they reached the backstretch. But entering the final turn, Perez started urging his mount forward and they began to navigate the rivals in front of them.
Going five wide entering the stretch, August Rain caught the foursome who had been dueling at the front. With a furlong to go, August Rain executed the final phase of the plan: showing he had more left in the tank.
He crossed the wire in 2:04.94. J Dutton , Roussette , and Classy City rounded out the board.
Bred by Redekop, August Rain improved to 3-1-1 this year from five starts. For his career, the 3-year-old gelding is 6-1-2 from 10 starts and has $208,919 in earnings.
