Mischief River Switches Surfaces in Del Mar Juv. Turf

Runner-up to Getaway Car  in the Best Pal Stakes (G3) on dirt, Bow River Ranch's Mischief River  switches surfaces in the $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes (G3T) Sept. 8.

A $500,000 son of Into Mischief  , Mischief River broke his maiden impressively going five furlongs on dirt at Los Alamitos Race Course before finishing a distant second to Getaway Car, who turned in a Goliath-like effort and will start as the morning line favorite in Sunday's Del Mar Futurity (G1).

Pedigree-wise, the turf should be well within Mischief River's scope. The James Glenn Jr.-trained colt has outstanding turf stallion Candy Ride  , a multiple group 1 winner on the turf in his native Argentina, as his broodmare sire, and his dam is a half sibling to grade 1-winning turf mare Harmonious . None of Mischief River's siblings has yet won on turf, however.

Mischief River will be ridden again by Cesar Ortega in his turf debut going a mile against an oversubscribed field.

A host of recent maiden winners, both on the dirt and turf, are poised to challenge Mischief River for black-type glory.

Calumet Farm homebred Tiz Happy  was triumphant first-out sprinting five furlongs on the Santa Anita Park turf June 13 for trainer Doug O'Neill before the Runhappy   colt wheeled back to finish fourth in the Best Pal.

Tiz Happy is one of three entered for O'Neill, who also has recent turf maiden victor Ivan the Great  and Pail Kitten, a front-running winner on dirt Aug.18.
