Robert Dick Memorial Draws Contentious Cast

Description:

Trainers Graham Motion and Jonathan Sheppard each have entered two mares in what appears to be a contentious renewal of the $200,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes (gr. IIIT) for fillies and mares July 11 at Delaware Park.

The Dick Memorial, at 1 3/8 miles, is the ninth race on a Saturday card that begins at 1:15 p.m. EDT. The feature is the $300,000 Delaware Oaks (gr. III).

Motion has entered The Elkstone Group's Lady of Gold and Augustin Stable's Kitten's Point, while Sheppard has Augustin Stable's Chat and Double K and Helen Alexander's Cat's Claw. The latter was supplemented for $2,500.

Lady of Gold, a two-time winner, prepped for the Dick Memorial with a solid third-place finish in the Justakiss Stakes at Delaware Park June 10. The 5-year-old Medaglia d'Oro   mare is graded stakes-placed in longer-distance events in California and should appreciate the stretch-out from 1 1/16 miles.

"She needs more ground and we kind of figured that out over the winter," Motion said. "Because of that, pretty much since she left California, this has been the race we have been pointing her for.  She ran terrific in the Justakiss and that race should really help set her up for the Robert Dick."

Trevor McCarthy gets a return call aboard Lady of Gold at 118 pounds from post 7. Kitten's Point, a 5-year-old Kitten's Joy   mare who won the 1 1/2-mile Bewitch Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland in her last start, will be ridden by Edgar Prado at 124 pounds.

Chat, a 5-year-old Dynaformer mare, finished third in the second division of the Justakiss Stakes behind Fasnacloich, who is entered in the Dick Memorial for owners Jerry Romans Jr. and Luc Paiement and trainer Hamilton Smith. Cat's Claw, another 5-year-old Dynafomer mare, is seeking her first victory since the Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes at Saratoga Race Course last summer.

Bethlehem Stable, Michael Dubb, and Highclere America's Rosalind, trained by Chad Brown, is the morning-line favorite in the Dick Memorial. The 4-year-old Broken Vow   filly finished fourth in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (gr. I) on dirt in her last start but before that won the grade II Sheepshead Bay Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on the grass.
