While the highly anticipate debut of Zenyatta’s first son, Cozmic One, in April didn’t go as planned with the 3-year-old colt finishing last in a maiden at Santa Anita, he is back to give racing another go today in the seventh race at Belmont Park.
In his debut, Cozmic One channeled his dam Zenyatta’s running style and dropped 10 lengths off the leader by the half. While he was closer to the field by the end of the race than he had been at any point before, finishing 3 ¼ lengths behind the second-to-last place horse he was still 8 ½ lengths behind the winning Tried and True.
"For whatever reason—and I don't know why—he dropped back more than we would have expected," trainer John Shirreffs told Blood-Horse after that race. "At one point, we're wondering if he was going to get into the race at all. At least he made a little move."
The first foal out of 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, Cozmic One is now stabled with trainer John Shirreffs’ Belmont string and seems to enjoy the track in morning workouts. Working over the Belmont surface on the last two Thursdays, Cozmic One has put in two bullet workouts (the fastest time at the distance over the track that day), going five furlongs in a little over a minute.
In today’s race, Cozmic One won’t be the only one related to a racing superstar as he takes on Indian Trail, a 3-year-old full brother to 2010 champion 2-year-old Uncle Mo. While Uncle Mo and Zenyatta never met on the track, both made headlines at the 2010 Breeders’ Cup with Uncle Mo winning that year’s Juvenile and Zenyatta finishing a close second when trying to win her second Classic.
The seventh race at Belmont is scheduled to go off at 4:26 p.m. ET today. The nine-runner field will cover 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.
