The sensationally fast turf sprinter Cogburn tallied his third graded stakes victory of the season Sept. 7 when taking the Ainsworth Turf Sprint Stakes (G2T) at Kentucky Downs. The win was rewarded by the members of the national media who vote on the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Top Thoroughbred poll as he joined the Top 10 in fifth place.
Making his first start since the June 8 Jaipur Stakes (G1T), where he set what is believed to be a 5 1/2-furlong world record in :59.80, the son of Not This Time did not disappoint going six furlongs Saturday, winning by 3 1/4 lengths while finishing just 0.27 seconds off the course record.
Owned by Clark Brewster and William and Corinne Heiligbrodt and trained by Steve Asmussen, Cogburn is a perfect 3-for-3 in 2024 with earnings of $1,793,700. Through his success, he has conquered two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races on his path to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Del Mar Nov. 2.
Taylor Made stallion Not This Time is also the sire of the other Top 10 addition to this week's poll as top marathoner Next rose from 12th to 10th ahead of the Sept. 21 Greenwood Cup (G3) at Parx Racing. Cogburn and Next are the only members of the Top 10 to hold perfect records in 2024.
